October is Italian Heritage Month

The Dante is buzzing with events for Italian Heritage Month and beyond!

Come to show your support for the victims of the central Italian earthquake on Sunday, October 23 with Boston Stands with Italy, in the North End at the DCR Steriti Rink from 1:00-4:00pm. This is a fundraiser sponsored by the Italian community and will feature food and wine from some of Boston’s best Italian restaurants.

On Saturday, October 22, 7:00pm, come and enjoy the Craig Hartley Trio at the Dante.


Hartley’s Books on Tape: Italian Edition is the trio he tours with in Italy. Theirs is a unique jazz trio which merges their transatlantic music sensibilities to create a vibrant, unique, and beautiful sound. Get more information here. We have several film screenings coming up, beginning Sunday, October 23 at 5:00pm The Right Distance Posterwith “La Giusta Distanza” (“The Right Distance”), a 2007 Carlo Mazzacurati film with a timely topic: suspicion of a long-time village resident who is a Tunisian immigrant. On Friday, October 28 at 7:00 pm, Umberto Mucci will present his book, We The Italians: One Flag, Two Hearts, One Hundred Interviews.                                                                                                             We the Italians. Mucci will discuss his book and have 3 of his interviewees present for the discussion. This is a free event and Mucci’s book will be available here for purchase and for him to autograph.

Once again, Bradley Pennington and the Boston Bel Canto Opera will have their performance on stage at the Dante. Join them on Sunday, October 30 at 2:00pm to hear operatic arias and duets from Italian and French operas, and Pennington will also give a piano recital.  Click here for more information.

April, May, June: Films, Music, Regional Dinner Party and More!

Spring has finally sprung, and the Dante is gearing up to celebrate!

On Sunday, April 24 at 6:30 pm, Professionisti Italiani a Boston (PIB) is collaborating with the Dante to present the film, Boston’s North End: An Italian-American Story. Join us here at the Dante for this fascinating history of Italian immigration to Boston.

May is the month of Dante Alighieri’s birthday, and we will be celebrating on Friday, May 6 with a program beginning at 6:00 pm that will include a reading from Dante’s Inferno, in Italian by Dott. Luisa Marino and in English by actor Marco Zanelli. In addition, O.S.I.A. and the Dante will be presenting the film, Palio, called by the New York Times “Rocky on Horseback”.

It’s a sure sign of Spring when the Coro-Dante presents its Concerto di Primavera. Director Kevin Galie` will be leading the chorus in selections from Ponchielli’s La Gioconda, as well as popular songs and madrigals from Napoli. Join us on Sunday, May 15 at 5:00 pm. Free admission, donations appreciated.

Bring your appetite and your dancing shoes for Regions of Italy: Dinner and Music on Saturday, June 11, beginning at 7:00 pm.

Cooking Class Open House, Feb.19; Film about poet Leopardi, Feb.28; Boston Art Song Society Concert, Mar.5 and More…

What better way to hunker down for the cold winter than to enjoy some wonderful Italian food! Our new cooking classes will be featuring Organic Italian Food and our wonderful new chef, Federico Zampieri. Come to our Open House on Friday evening, February 19 from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm.

The new session for the Organic Cooking classes will begin on March 3 through May 19. Sign up for 1, 2 or as many as you like.




Come to a film screening of the life of poet Giacomo Leopardi on Sunday, February 28 from 3 pm – 6 pm. More information will be available at the Dante office: admin@dantemass.org or call (617)876-5160.

On Friday evening, March 4, the Office of the Italian Consul General in Boston will present “Scrivere Come Respirare” (Writing Like Breathing), an homage to Dacia Maraini. This will be at the Dante from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm.













We are very excited to join with the Boston Art Song Society to present “La Serenata”, a celebration of Italian song and culture at the Dante on Saturday, March 5 at 7:00 pm. There will be a pre-concert lecture by Kevin Galie`, the director of the Coro-Dante.

It’s beginning to feel like the holiday season at the Dante!

Our beautiful Christmas Party will be the place to celebrate on Saturday, December 12. Great food, great friends, music and dancing will make for a most festive occasion!

You are in for a real treat with the annual Christmas Concert of the Coro-Dante. Traditional Italian Christmas songs plus choruses from Cartellieri’s “La Celebre Nativita del Redentore” will be performed twice: on Sunday, December 6 at the Sacred Heart Church in East Boston at 5 pm, and at the Dante on Sunday, December 13 at 5 pm. Admission is free, but donations are always appreciated.

Fall is time for Italian Music!

November is shaping up to be rich in Italian musical performances, beginning with The Classics, a trio from Abruzzo, performing “Songs That Unified Italy” at the Dante Alighieri Society on Sunday, November 8. A buffet dinner is included with the $30 donation.


Also, Australian-Italian heartthrob, Alfio, will be enchanting us with his beautiful vocals at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston on Nov.12. Alfio, who sings in English and Italian, has been compared to Andrea Bocelli and Frank Sinatra. And Mezzo-soprano Sophie Michaux will be joining the Cherry Street Singers for a performance of Monteverdi’s “Scherzi Musicali”, Italian madrigals sung by young Cantabrigians at the MIT chapel on Nov.14. 

Last but not least, Bradley Pennington, artistic director of the Boston Bel Canto Opera, will be bringing a performance to the Dante on Sunday, November 15 at 2:30 pm. BUON ASCOLTO!

We are pleased to share with you the CALENDAR OF EVENTS for the 16th anniversary celebration of October Italian-American Heritage Month. Every year we try to offer a variety of programs that highlight the outstanding talents of Italian and Italian Americans. Many of these events are free and open to the public thanks to the generous donations received from the Italian Consulate, organizations, businesses, libraries, colleges, and individuals.

Here they are some events that they will take place at Dante Alighieri Society of Massachusetts.

OCTOBER 19TH, DARIO FO: MUSICA E PAROLE. 5:00 PM. Discovering Dario Fo and Franca Rame. Lecture with video materials and a short performance. Presented by Walter Valeri, former personal assistant of Dario Fo and Franca Rame, and Bob Scanlan Director of The Poets’ Theatre – Cambridge. Refreshments will be served. OCTOBER 25TH, PARLARE CON LA MUSICA E IL PROPRIO CORPO – PETRA CONTI INTERVIEW. 5:00 PM. Stefano Marchese interviews Petra Conti, first ballerina at the Boston Ballet, with screening of video clips. Month of October through December there is also “ART OF ITALIAN CUISINE” — Authentic Regional Italian Cuisine Master Classes. You can discover your inner chef and Italy’s incredibly diverse culinary landscape to create your own three course masterpiece! Six different master-classes introduce the distinct and exciting cuisines of six Italian regions. Each class lasts four hours and includes a sit-down dinner. You will cook in a newly equipped kitchen at the Dante Alighieri Society in Kendall Square, Cambridge, and enjoy your meal in intimate and beautiful surroundings. Ornella Iuorio is an Architect with a big passion for dance. She earned a diploma in Classical Ballet and Contemporary Dance in 2002 in Italy and since then she has been teaching ballet and Italian folk dance.
Dr. Iuorio has performed as Tanztheater artist in several festivals joining different companies.
